The IACTS Database – current status report

Today’s world is driven by Artificial intelligence or AI as it is fondly called. This AI is based on humungous amount of data which is being collected from varied sources. The data itself is multifaceted and can be text, images, sounds or any other sensory perception. What AI does is look for associations in this data with the given task, assess the strength of the association, predict the probable outcomes, and based on this proceed along the path which gives required result. The machine learns by using data sets, today data is an essential commodity. The same data processed by our teachers in their mind as experience is what is passed on to the next generation as guidelines.

As surgeons we need to generate data in large amount not only to train the AI, but also our next generation. Although there was a lot of discussion in the IACTS conferences regarding a database, precious little action took place, till 2023, when the first data entry was started with 10 institutions being invited. Of these only 5 began actively participating in data entry. The first annual report was generated and presented in 2024. Since then, many more institutions have joined, and currently 34 institutions have joined, and the data entered stands at 32731 adult surgeries and 8342 pediatric and congenital surgeries.
